Friday, September 18 is launch day for iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. Boxes heading out today are not sitting on the public launch build of iOS 27. MacRumors reported Thursday that units ship with iOS 27 variants numbered 24A427 or 24A8428. The public launch build is 24A437. Setup will almost certainly ask for an update before the phone settles in.
iPhone 18 Pro ships older iOS 27 builds
Juli Clover’s report is short and specific. Customers who get an iPhone 18 Pro or Pro Max on Friday should plan for a software update during setup. The gap is only a build number, not a jump to a different major release. Still, the download and install take time on a busy Wi-Fi day. People who already tracked iOS 27 becoming available will recognize 24A437 as the consumer launch line.
The same pattern shows up on Apple Watch. Series 12 and Ultra 4 leave the factory on watchOS 27 build 24R359. The launch watchOS 27 build is 24R364. Pairing a new watch on Friday may also pull that day-one update. Keep the watch on the charger while it installs if the prompt appears during first pairing.
AirPods 5 day-one firmware is expected over the air
MacRumors also flags AirPods 5. A day-one firmware update is expected, but that one should arrive over the air rather than as a boxed install step. Apple already pushed AirPods firmware 9A350 to cover iOS 27 features. Owners who open a new AirPods 5 case near an updated iPhone may see that OTA land soon after pairing. Leave the case open for a few minutes if the update stalls.
None of this is unusual for an Apple hardware launch. Manufacturing batches freeze firmware weeks before the public software cut. The phones still boot into iOS 27. They just need the final retail build before they match phones that updated from an older model on September 14.
Setup day timing on September 18
Store pickup and early deliveries both land on the same calendar as this build gap. Shoppers who chased launch-day pickup after online ship windows slipped should budget extra minutes at the table. A solid Wi-Fi link helps. Cellular tethering works too if store Wi-Fi is crowded.
