Some iPhone 18 Pro Max owners on AT&T hit dead cellular and stuck eSIMs

A subset of U.S. iPhone 18 Pro Max owners on AT&T say cellular is dead after setup. Calls, texts, and data fail on the carrier network. Some units never finish eSIM provisioning. MacRumors collected the reports Friday from its forums, Reddit, and Apple Support Community.

This is a separate track from the Face ID freeze-and-reboot bug. Apple already promised that fix for early next week. Our note on the Face ID reboot software patch covers that path. The AT&T cases still have no public timeline from Apple or the carrier.

What affected owners are seeing

MacRumors describes handsets that cannot join AT&T for voice, SMS, or mobile data. A slice of those owners also cannot push a new eSIM onto the phone at all.

AppleInsider, writing a day earlier, heard from a podcast listener whose cellular calls would not place or receive. Wi-Fi Calling still worked. Signal either swung around or sat on SOS only. That account names both iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max. MacRumors sticks to Pro Max in its headline write-up. The two outlets do not fully agree on how wide the cut is.

U.S. Pro Max runs Qualcomm; other new iPhones use C2

The U.S. iPhone 18 Pro Max is the odd modem out this cycle. TechInsights teardown work cited by MacRumors puts Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X80 in that SKU. The smaller iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone Duo, and non-U.S. Pro Max units ship Apple’s C2 modem instead.

MacRumors says it is unclear whether that split drives the AT&T failures. If AppleInsider is right that some 18 Pro units are hit too, the Qualcomm chip alone cannot explain every case. Still, buyers comparing carrier behavior should know the U.S. Max is not on the same modem as the rest of the new lineup.

Apple and AT&T have said almost nothing in public

Neither company has posted a clear customer bulletin for this specific failure as of Saturday morning Asia time. AppleInsider’s secondhand note says AT&T acknowledged one case and suggested switching back to a prior iPhone. That is not a carrier press statement.

Separately, AppleInsider also reports AT&T has no plan to support iOS 27 iPhone Handoff. That is a product choice, not a bug fix. Owners watching number share can still read our Handoff carrier limits brief for the T-Mobile and Telekom launch path.

What to try while waiting, and what not to assume

Wi-Fi Calling is the only stopgap both reports treat as dependable when the cellular path is dark. AppleInsider says Reddit workarounds are inconsistent. Document the failure with both AT&T and Apple Support before the 14-day return window closes. Keep the trade-in phone if you still have it.

A network reset sometimes clears odd eSIM states. Steps sit in our Reset Network Settings tip. It will wipe saved Wi-Fi passwords. It is not a guaranteed AT&T cure.

Apple is testing iOS 27.0.1, expected next week, and MacRumors hopes for a carrier update in that train. Nothing ties that build to these AT&T cases yet. Shipping tip on many phones is still 24A437, as noted in the day-11 firmware brief. Do not buy a Max on the assumption 27.0.1 lands as the fix.
