Apple has confirmed to 9to5Mac that a software update for some iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max phones is due early next week. The fix targets a Face ID fail path that freezes the handset and then forces a hard reboot.
The bug did not hit every unit. Social posts and reader mail still made it look fairly common in the first week after launch. Our earlier note on Face ID panic-full reboot reports already tracked refunds and store swaps before Apple spoke.
How 9to5Mac reproduced the freeze
9to5Mac’s Benjamin Mayo walked through the path on an iPhone 18 Pro. Cover the face during a Face ID attempt into the Passwords app. The display stops taking touch. A few seconds later the phone hard reboots.
After the reboot, a panic log shows up under Analytics in Settings. That line matches what many owners pasted from Diagnostics. It also pushed the story toward software rather than a bad Face ID module on every returned phone.
Redesigned Face ID under a smaller Dynamic Island
iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max move the infrared camera behind the display near the status-bar clock. The visible Dynamic Island shrinks by about 25 percent versus last year’s Pro models. Face ID still unlocks the phone, signs into apps, and approves Apple Pay.
That hardware change is why some buyers treated freezes as a sensor fault. Apple Stores saw swap requests early in the week. With a software patch now confirmed, a hardware exchange is not required for this specific reboot path.
iOS 27.0.1 shows up in analytics
Separately, 9to5Mac and MacRumors both see iOS 27.0.1 traffic in their analytics. The seed looks like a small bug-fix train. Apple has not said the Face ID reboot fix ships only inside 27.0.1, or that 27.0.1 contains nothing else.
Chance Miller at 9to5Mac notes he could not reproduce the freeze on his own Pro and Pro Max. Other owners clearly can. That split fits a software race or a subset of Face ID enrollments more than a blanket hardware fail.
Readers already watching the wider 27.x line can keep an eye on the iOS 27.2 public beta Health redesign. That seed is a different train from the early-next-week point fix Apple just promised.
watchOS 27.0.1 already shipped for random restarts
Apple also pushed watchOS 27.0.1 for Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4 random restarts. Our firmware brief on watchOS 27.0.1 while iPhone tip stays on 24A437 covered that cut. The Watch patch and the coming iPhone software are related only in timing, not as one package.
