iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max reach stores and delivery trucks on Friday, September 18. The headline camera story on both models is the 48MP Fusion Main with a true variable aperture. Apple’s Newsroom described automatic and manual control. MacRumors lists four stops: ƒ/1.48, ƒ/1.8, ƒ/2.8, and ƒ/4.0.
Six blades on the Fusion Main
Apple says six laser-cut blades move through those apertures with a new rotor mechanism. The Camera app can widen to ƒ/1.48 for low light. Portraits land at ƒ/1.8 for a balance of light and depth. Narrower settings push more of a group into focus, including ƒ/4.0 for deeper scenes. Pros can lock any of the four stops by hand. Developers also get an API for finer control inside third-party apps.
A new computational pipeline sits behind the sensor. Apple claims sharper detail from the Main camera and upgraded Photographic Styles with texture and grain knobs. Time-lapse can now record in 4K with Dolby Vision HDR. Cinematic effects can be applied after capture on video shot at up to 60 fps. Night mode still leans on the automatic path when the scene goes dark.
Pro controls land in the Camera app
Pro controls are the new customizable panel on both Pro models. Manual tools cover lens aperture, shutter speed, and white balance. A histogram is available for exposure checks. Apple’s launch photos show shutter-speed experiments with motion blur. That set of controls is aimed at people who already think in stops and Kelvin, not only at automatic Night mode. You can keep everyday shooting on auto and flip into Pro controls when a frame needs a fixed aperture.
Reference Image rides the same Main sensor
The Fusion Main sensor also underpins Apple Reference Image. In Reference mode, signed sensor data can become an unalterable reference photo for authenticity checks. We covered the longer Security Research write-up in an earlier brief on Apple Reference Image. Capture rules still differ by region. China has no capture at launch. In the EU, capture on the Pro phones is held at launch while develop and view remain available on iOS 27 family software.
Buyers comparing form factors may also look at the separate iPhone Duo camera contrast. Duo stays on its own October pre-order calendar. Today’s store shelves are the Pro and Pro Max pair. Hardware around the camera includes A20 Pro and a next-generation vapor chamber, which Apple ties to sustained performance while shooting and processing.
Pricing, colors, and where it ships today
U.S. pricing starts at $1,199 for iPhone 18 Pro and $1,299 for iPhone 18 Pro Max. Storage options are 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB. Finishes are black, silver, glacier, and burgundy. Apple lists availability beginning September 18 in more than 65 countries and regions. About 20 more markets follow on September 25.
Those launch-day units also sit on the software stack already public with iOS 27. Shoppers who only care about optics still get a clear message for Friday: variable aperture is no longer a rumor slide. It is in the boxes arriving now, with four listed stops, Pro controls, and the Fusion Main sensor that also feeds Reference Image where the feature is allowed.
