MacRumors published a Tuesday, September 15 guide on what the iPhone Duo camera can and cannot do. The foldable keeps Duo-only Camera and FaceTime tricks. It also skips several Pro photography tools.
Smart Take, Kid Cue, Duo Preview
Smart Take watches a group scene and fires when everyone, including the owner, looks ready. You can half-fold the Duo, prop it up, step into frame, and wait. Kid Cue plays Peanuts animations on the outer display so kids look at the lens. Duo Preview mirrors the live view on both screens, so the subject can fix pose or framing.
Duo FaceTime is not Dual Capture
Duo FaceTime lets a nearby person join on the outer display while the owner stays on the inner display. That is different from Dual Capture, which records front and rear video at once. The folding hinge also works as a stand for FaceTime, time-lapse, and longer exposures. Rear 48MP selfies with the outer display as a viewfinder are in the mix.
Hardware that ships
Duo uses a Dual Fusion pair: 48MP Main and 48MP Ultra Wide. Default stills land at 26mm 24MP, with a 12MP 2x crop at 52mm. Sensor-shift OIS is present, not the second-generation version on Pro. Ultra Wide is 13mm with macro. Zoom tops out at 2x optical-quality in, 2x optical out, and digital to 10x. Outer front camera is 12MP. Inner FaceTime camera is 1080p under the display.
What Duo leaves out
No Telephoto lens. No Pro Controls. No Apple Reference Image. No variable aperture. No spatial photos or video. No ProRAW, ProRes, ProRes RAW, Genlock, or Apple Log 2. No Adaptive True Tone flash and no studio-quality four-mic array. Photographic Styles with texture and grain do ship. So do smart focus tracking, 4K Dolby Vision up to 120 fps, Cinematic mode up to 60 fps with post-capture effects, and stabilized 4K Dolby Vision time-lapse.
Pre-orders start Friday, October 16. Availability begins October 23. U.S. pricing starts at $1,999.
