Apple hardware engineering VP Tom Marieb told TechRadar the iPhone Duo’s matte nano-texture inner display is meant to hide crease changes over time, not only cut glare. Asked whether the crease would get more obvious the way other foldables often do, he said the finish helps. Then he invited buyers to judge Apple on the result.
“Hold us accountable to that, please,” Marieb said in the interview MacRumors quoted. Pre-orders still open October 16 at 5 a.m. PT. Availability starts October 23 in more than 70 countries. U.S. pricing begins at $1,999.
Why Apple picked a matte inner screen
Marieb tied crease visibility to how light hits the panel. Glossy glass, he said, makes small topology changes easy to spot because of specular reflections. A matte nano-texture scatters that light. Apple’s own Duo Newsroom copy uses the same pitch: the finish reduces glare and is meant to minimize crease visibility.
The company has not published a fold-count rating in the materials we checked. Independent wear tests will still matter after October 23. Until then, the public line is the nano-texture plus the hinge stack, not a numeric lifetime claim.
Hinge torque meant to feel like a car door
Marieb called the hinge something he was “especially proud of.” Apple spent a long time on the torque profile so the book-style open and close would feel solid, closer to a high-end car door than a floppy tablet cover. Partially folded seated and standing modes were part of that design intent.
Apple’s September 9 press release puts more than 100 components in the hinge assembly. It is supposed to support the center of the 7.6-inch inner display so the panel stays flat when open, then close with magnets that feel secure. Grade 5 titanium, Ceramic Shield on the back, and Ceramic Shield 2 on the outer display round out the durability stack Apple lists.
What Apple did say, and what it did not
Marieb also talked about Ceramic Shield 2 and his dislike of third-party screen protectors in the full TechRadar piece. That is product confidence talk, not a warranty rewrite. Apple still rates Duo IP68 for splash, water, and dust under lab conditions, with the usual caveat that resistance can fade with wear and that liquid damage is not covered.

Dates buyers should keep straight
October 16 is the pre-order gun. October 23 is first availability in the large country list that includes the U.S., China, Japan, the UK, and Germany. Another 28 markets follow on October 30. Duo ships with iOS 27.1, not the 27.0 tip most iPhone 18 Pro units are on today.
