Apple released iOS 27.0.1 on Monday, September 28. It is the first update since iOS 27 shipped two weeks earlier. The main fix targets the Face ID restart bug on iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. The update is offered to every iPhone that runs iOS 27, not only the new Pro models.
The install path is the usual one: Settings, General, Software Update. Apple also pushed iPadOS 27.0.1 and visionOS 27.0.1 the same day, plus iOS 26.7.1 and iPadOS 26.7.1 for devices that stay on the older release.
Three fixes in the iOS 27.0.1 release notes
Apple lists three items. First, iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max "may unexpectedly restart when Face ID fails to authenticate." Second, a color artifact may appear on photos captured at 2x under certain lighting conditions at f/1.48, on "a small number" of iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max units. Third, opening Notification Center and Control Center at the same time could leave the touchscreen unresponsive. That last one is not Pro-specific.
The f/1.48 item points at the new variable aperture main camera. The widest setting is where the artifact showed up. Our launch-day report on the ƒ/1.48 to ƒ/4 aperture covers the range. The touchscreen fix applies to anyone who pulls down both panels quickly, including anyone who rebuilt a custom Control Center layout on iOS 27.
Face ID reports since September 18
The Pro phones reached stores on September 18. Within days, owners posted on Reddit and the MacRumors forums about Face ID trouble. A failed scan while opening a locked app could freeze the phone, then reboot it. Some saw a "Face ID is Not Available" message during setup. Others reported problems with the Require Attention for Face ID setting. We logged the early panic-full reboot reports on September 21.
Some owners were given replacement units. Engadget said the problem persisted for some of them. Apple then told 9to5Mac a software update would address it. We covered that early-next-week fix confirmation on September 25.
iPhone 18 Pro is the first iPhone with the Face ID infrared camera under the display. MacRumors noted it is still unclear whether that hardware played any part. The release note describes a restart after failed authentication only. It does not mention the setup message or Require Attention.
Speaker crackle not on the list
A separate iPhone 18 Pro complaint surfaced the day after the update. Owners describe a crackle, a faint tick or pop, or random clicking, mostly from the earpiece speaker. Both the Pro and Pro Max appear to be affected, MacRumors reported on September 29.
Reported triggers include scrolling websites, incoming notifications, the keyboard popping up and cellular calls. On affected units, toggling Airplane Mode or changing brightness quickly also sets it off. iOS 27.0.1 does not list a speaker fix, and early feedback says it did not help. Some owners who returned a phone got a second unit with the same noise. Apple has not said anything about the speaker reports.
Mac and Watch updates around it
Apple also released macOS 27.0.1, macOS 26.7.1 and macOS 15.8.1 on September 28 as security updates, 9to5Mac reported. The week before, watchOS 27.0.1 went out for random reboots on Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4.
TechRepublic's advice to Pro owners who saw the Face ID or camera bugs: test those features again after updating, and contact Apple Support if the same behavior comes back.
