The Verge’s Jess Weatherbed flagged a quiet battery-firmware note on September 21, 2026. iPhone 18 Pro Max ships with a software cap that keeps the pack under the 20Wh single-cell air-shipping line. First boot lifts that cap.
Apple’s support page calls it a battery-firmware solution. It is not a smaller cell. It is a temporary charge limit that clears when the owner activates the phone.
20Wh on the plane, full Wh after setup
International rules lean hard on single-cell packs above 20 watt-hours. Many Android makers answer with dual-cell packs outside Asia. Apple’s path here is firmware.
The Verge cites about 21.75Wh once unlocked on U.S. eSIM-only Pro Max units. European models with a physical SIM slot sit near 21.06Wh after the same unlock. Those figures are the rated capacity after activation, not the in-box shipping state.
Apple’s September 9 Pro Max pitch already stressed battery. Up to 45 hours of video playback on eSIM-only models. Up to 30 hours of typical use on a full charge. Five minutes of wired charge for around seven hours of video. The firmware trick is how that larger pack clears shipping desks.
Prepare to Ship for returns and repairs
Owners who need to mail the phone again can put the limit back. Path is Settings, General, Transfer or Reset iPhone, then Prepare to Ship. That mode caps charging at 80 percent for 14 days while the firmware shipping limit returns.
Apple says the battery might need to discharge for Prepare to Ship to finish. The phone can run warmer than usual during that step. The toggle can be turned off again from the same Settings path if plans change.
That matters for trade-ins, warranty mail-ins, and private sales. A Pro Max that left the store at full rating has to look like a shippable battery again before it goes back in a box.
How this pairs with the bigger Pro Max pack
eSIM-only Pro Max models drop the physical SIM tray and use that space for more battery. Apple tied that to the largest battery-life jump it has claimed on iPhone. The firmware gate is the logistics half of that hardware choice.
iFixit’s iPhone 18 Pro teardown already showed a screwed battery tray on the smaller Pro. The Max story this week is less about screws and more about how Apple clears the 20Wh line without splitting the cell.
Store timing and what buyers see
Pro and Pro Max hit stores and delivery on September 18. Fifth Avenue and other Apple Stores were open that day. Fresh units leave the warehouse under the firmware lock. After the first successful boot and activation, charging capacity opens to the rated Wh figures above.
U.S. pricing still starts at $1,299 for Pro Max, as listed in the event price brief. Storage runs 256GB through 2TB. Colors remain black, silver, glacier, and burgundy.
Apple has not framed Prepare to Ship as a consumer marketing feature. It is a support path for people who already own the phone and need to put it on a truck again. The interesting part is the first-boot unlock sitting underneath every new Pro Max that cleared air cargo this month.
