Apple seeded the second developer build of iOS 27.2 on September 21, 2026. 9to5Mac’s Marcus Mendes dug through the binary the same afternoon. Inside sits more work on AutoLock, the unannounced anti-snatch lock that tries to freeze an iPhone after it is yanked from a hand.
Apple has not named the feature in a press release. It is not a Settings toggle yet. The new strings still matter because they show what sensors and vetoes Apple is wiring in.
AutoLock signals in the beta binary
According to the code 9to5Mac saw, AutoLock can score several theft-like signals. Sharp acceleration that looks like a grab. A paired Apple Watch that stays unreachable for a stretch. Lost Watch connectivity. Network gone for too long. The phone left unlocked past a set interval.
Earlier strings already pointed at a location check close to Stolen Device Protection’s familiar-place rules. The beta 2 material adds a voting idea. A theft signal can ask for a lock. Biometrics, a familiar location, or certain foreground apps can veto that ask.
False lock safeguards
New references also describe a backoff. After repeated automatic locks, AutoLock can quiet itself for a while. That is meant to stop a cascade when the phone keeps locking on the owner.
Successful Face ID or Touch ID is listed as a brake. So are some app activities that would otherwise look like theft noise. The system is trying to tell a snatch from a run, a subway tunnel, or a Watch left on a charger.
None of this is a user-facing option in iOS 27.2 beta 2. 9to5Mac says the AutoLock service is running in the background. The piece that actually locks the phone stays disabled. Likely a silent test path, not a finished ship feature.
Where this sits next to Stolen Device Protection
Stolen Device Protection already slows Apple Account and passcode changes away from home. Face ID with no passcode fallback covers passwords and cards. AutoLock aims earlier in the chain. Lock the screen right after the snatch, before a thief even starts typing.
That gap is the one stolen-phone scam write-ups keep circling. Find My and Lost Mode still need the owner to act. An automatic lock would buy minutes without that tap.
iOS 27.2 timing
MacRumors noted Apple pushed 27.2 beta 2 about a week after beta 1. Developers pull it under Settings, General, Software Update after opting into the iOS 27 developer beta. Public iOS 27 remains on build 24A437 for now, as our day-seven firmware note listed.
iOS 27.1 is still expected to ride with iPhone Duo on October 23. 27.2 is tracking for sometime in October as well, with Health redesign and more Siri AI languages among the named pieces. AutoLock is not on that announced list.
Whether AutoLock ships in 27.2, a later point release, or stays buried is Apple’s call. Beta 2 only shows the company is still writing the detector, not shipping the lock.
