A case was reported on Reddit where the iPhone 17 Pro Max’s main body color, “Cosmic Orange,” changed color to “Rose Gold” after purchase.
The poster says that he plans to bring the discolored iPhone 17 Pro Max to the Apple Store to see if it is eligible for replacement.
Aluminum casing changes color to rose gold
In the photo posted on Reddit, you can see that the aluminum casing of the iPhone 17 Pro Max, which has a body color of “cosmic orange”, has changed color to a deep pink (or “rose gold” according to the poster).
The Cosmic Orange tint only remains slightly around the rear camera bump, and the rest of the area is almost uniformly discolored.
The back glass does not change color and maintains its original color.
On the other hand, the glass back panel retains its original “cosmic orange” color, and no discoloration has been confirmed.
The main body of the iPhone 17 Pro Max is colored aluminum through anodizing (alumite treatment), and it is thought that gases or environmental factors that affect this process may have been the cause.
Reported that iPhone 6S was also discolored.
Another user reported that after displaying the iPhone 6s “Rose Gold” model for a year, the color had changed to a darker color than when it was new.
Therefore, it seems that color changes in the anodized aluminum material due to aging and environmental reactions have been occurring in the iPhone series for some time.
