Apple launched its new M6 chip without warning before its autumn launch. To the surprise of the outside world, M6 also preceded the yet-to-be-released A20 Pro and became Apple’s first chip to use TSMC’s 2nm process.
Apple’s autumn conference is expected to be held in September. It was widely expected that the iPhone 18 Pro series and the A20 Pro equipped with the first folding iPhone would be the first to usher in the 2nm chip era for Apple. Unexpectedly, the M6 would eventually take the lead.
However, M6 and A20 Pro belong to the same generation of chip family, which also makes M6 an important clue to observe A20 Pro. Although the positioning of the two chips is different, and the performance of the M series has always been higher than the A series used in the iPhone, the M6 was the first to reveal Apple’s upgrade direction after entering the 2nm process. Therefore, the outside world believes that some technological progress is expected to be reflected in the A20 Pro.
According to information released by Apple, the M6 is built using an advanced 2-nanometer process, which can integrate higher-density transistors into smaller dies to further improve performance and energy efficiency. M6 uses a 12-core CPU, 12-core GPU and dual 16-core neural network engines, with peak computing power up to twice that of previous generations, further enhancing device-side AI computing capabilities.
The actual architecture and core configuration of the A20 Pro have not been revealed yet, but thanks to the 2-nanometer process technology, performance and energy efficiency are expected to be significantly improved. It is also expected to further enhance the performance and battery life of the iPhone 18 Pro series and folding iPhone.
