For many years, the vertically arranged camera lenses have been the “core identity” of Samsung’s Galaxy series of mobile phones, maintaining a consistent style from flagship foldable phones to entry-level models. However, this classic appearance may undergo major changes in the future.
According to the latest report from foreign media “SammyGuru”, in the patent application documents submitted by Samsung, a folding mobile phone with a new “horizontal camera module” design was found. This configuration is highly similar to the signature camera bar of the Google Pixel series. It is also reminiscent of the horizontal arrangement vocabulary that Samsung has used in the Galaxy S10 series in the past.
The key driving force behind the switch to horizontal lenses may come from the new generation of Qi2 magnetic wireless charging technology. Currently, the vertical lens of Samsung mobile phones extends downward, which easily interferes with accessories such as magnetic power banks and card holders or even blocks the lens, limiting accessory support. However, switching to a horizontal camera module can effectively free up the magnetic space in the center of the back of the fuselage.
At the same time, “SammyGuru” also emphasized that the patent document only represents concept exploration, and it may take several years from patent to actual mass production, and it has not been disclosed whether it will be applied to the next generation model. It may still be difficult for consumers to see this change on new commercially available phones in the short term, but this patent undoubtedly shows that Samsung is seeking new possibilities to break through the existing design framework.
