Samsung launched its new wide-format foldable phone Z Fold 8 this year, which has been well received since its launch. The latest news points out that Samsung plans to take advantage of the victory and further expand its wide-folding lineup next year, which means it may launch “two Z Fold 9” models in one go.
Z Fold 8 adopts a wide and short shape similar to a passport. When unfolded, the main screen ratio is 4:3, which can reduce the black borders on the upper and lower screens when watching videos and playing games. Due to the very good market response, Korean media ETNews reported that Samsung has started the development plan for two wide-fold foldable models next year. However, the specific differences between the two models are still unclear, but one of them may regard “watching dramas” as its main selling point and adopt a screen ratio that is more suitable for watching videos.

This also means that Samsung’s foldable phone lineup next year may expand to five models at once. In addition to the successors of this year’s existing models, including Z Fold9 Ultra, Z Fold9, and Z Flip9, another new wide-version folding phone may also be added, as well as a second-generation tri-fold phone.
In fact, Z Fold 8 has been a hot seller in many markets since its launch. Judging from the pre-order results in South Korea, Z Fold 8 accounts for about 70% of the total, becoming the main sales force of this generation of new folding phones. The Taiwan market is also popular, with Z Fold 8 accounting for 50% of the market, which shows that the wide design is indeed favored by many consumers.
It is worth noting that Apple is expected to launch its first foldable iPhone in September, and it is rumored that it will also adopt a “passport ratio” similar to the Z Fold 8. However, it has recently been reported that the initial supply of foldable iPhones may be quite limited.
