Google officially launched Android 17 last week, and Pixel phones were the first to qualify for the upgrade. However, in addition to the official new features, Pixel users actually have a hidden benefit that Google has not specifically promoted, which is support for LHDCv5 high-quality Bluetooth audio technology.
After upgrading to Android 17, Pixel phones can natively support LHDCv5. Compared with AAC and SBC, which were common in the past, LHDCv5 has a higher transmission rate and can further improve wireless audio quality. This is not a Pixel-only feature. In theory, all devices upgraded to Android 17 will have the opportunity to receive the same support.

Because LHDCv5 can transmit more audio data, it can theoretically retain more sound details and dynamic range. If you usually just watch dramas, watch YouTube or watch streaming videos, the difference in sound quality may not be too obvious. But for users who often use high-quality headphones to listen to music, especially music types that value detailed performance such as classical music and jazz, LHDCv5 can provide a richer sound level.
In addition, LHDCv5 also has lower latency characteristics, which can reduce the out-of-synchronization of picture and sound, and is also helpful for watching videos and mobile gaming experiences.
Hidden in developer options
However, Google did not put this feature in the general menu, but hidden it in the “Developer Options”. The steps to enable are as follows: Go to “Settings” → “About Phone” → Find “Build Number” → Click a few times in succession to open “Developer Options” → Find “Bluetooth Audio Codec” in the “Bluetooth” section. Please note that actual use still depends on whether the headset is compatible.
