There are various ways for prototypes of unreleased products to be leaked out in the technology circle, such as the sensational “iPhone legacy bar incident” that year. But this time the situation is even more exaggerated. A prototype of a suspected Google Pixel Watch 5 was actually found on the bottom of the sea.
Randy Pitchford, founder of the well-known game company Gearbox Software, recently shared an incredible “interesting story” on X (formerly Twitter). He said that a friend accidentally found a smart watch on the seabed while diving near the Caribbean island of St. Maarten. Surprisingly, this watch is likely to be Google’s yet-to-be-announced Pixel Watch 5.

Judging from the photos he published, the words “Google” and “Pixel Watch 5” are clearly printed on the back of the watch. Although the device was in low power consumption mode at the time and the power was insufficient to boot normally, it was still able to display the correct time through backup power, indicating that the watch should be able to operate normally.
Since Google has not released the Pixel Watch 5 yet, there is widespread speculation that this is likely to be a prototype under testing. In the past, prototypes of unreleased products were mostly photographed on the streets, in cafes or other public places, but this time they were picked up from the bottom of the sea, which is unprecedented.

Of course, some netizens questioned whether the photo had been modified. However, Randy Pitchford himself is a well-known figure, and it is generally believed that he had no reason to deliberately publish the fake photos, which also adds a lot of credibility to this incident.
On the other hand, as can be seen from the label on the back of the watch, it has functions such as a heart rate sensor, blood oxygen sensor, UWB ultra-wideband technology, and IP68 dustproof and waterproof. However, these specifications have actually appeared on Pixel Watch 4. In addition, the overall appearance design looks very close to the previous generation, so even if this is indeed a Pixel Watch 5 prototype, it is still unclear what major upgrades and improvements Google will bring.
The incident later took an unexpected turn. Randy Pitchford later updated his post to say that he had found the owner of the smart watch and had arranged for its return. He also said with a smile: “Thank you for the power of the Internet.”
So far, Google has not made any response to this matter, so whether this mysterious watch fished out of the sea is the real Pixel Watch 5 prototype remains to be further confirmed.
