Google officially announced at this year’s I/O Developer Conference that it will launch its first Android XR smart glasses this fall. This will be the second time Google has entered the competition for smart glasses. As early as 2014, Google wanted to challenge the market with Google Glass, but the result was a complete failure. In this regard, Google executives stated in a recent interview that the core reason for the failure was “lack of fashion sense.”
In 2014, Google launched Google Glass in the United States. Users can run multiple apps, check notifications, and even shoot 720p videos through the touch panel of the frame and the display screen. The concept is very avant-garde. However, less than a year later, Google announced the discontinuation of production, and subsequently only turned to commercial versions for enterprise users.
Looking back at foreign media reports at the time, it was generally believed that Google Glass had poor battery life, had privacy concerns and was prone to overheating. In addition, the price was as high as US$1,500, making it simply unaffordable for mass consumers. However, when Android head Sameer Samat recently talked about the glasses, he believed that its biggest flaw was not the technology, but the appearance.
The appearance of Google Glass is very futuristic and technological, but it is contrary to the daily style of mainstream glasses. Sameer Samat said that the team learned a lot from the Google Glass case, and he believed that the most important thing was “fashion first, technology second.” He explained that if technology comes first, no matter how good the technology is, it may not be popularized because it is difficult for most consumers to accept it. Therefore, emotion, beauty and functionality are equally important, which is why Google chose to cooperate with Gentle Monster.
In fact, the reason why smart glasses can make waves again is indeed inseparable from their beautiful appearance. The Meta Ray-Ban smart glasses that started this wave did not bring real breakthrough innovation in terms of functionality. More consumers focused on Ray-Ban’s beautiful and fashionable classic shape. When Google released Android XR smart glasses, it also continued to emphasize the importance of beauty and thinness, obviously hoping to attract consumers to pay for them first.
