Apple has continued to adjust the body materials of its flagship iPhones in recent years. The latest news points out that aluminum alloy is actually just a transitional solution for Apple, and more ideal new materials are still being evaluated in the future.
According to the Chinese Weibo “Snap Digital” news, Apple is considering two directions, including “improved titanium” and “liquid metal”, hoping to take into account weight, body strength and heat dissipation performance.
Improved titanium metal, liquid metal
Although the iPhone 15 Pro series chose titanium to successfully reduce weight, its heat dissipation performance was criticized, so Apple switched to aluminum alloy for the iPhone 17 Pro series. However, aluminum alloy is not without its shortcomings. Compared with titanium, aluminum alloy is generally considered to be slightly inferior in terms of high-end and texture. In addition, the body is more prone to scratches, which has also attracted complaints from some users.
Therefore, Apple does not seem to have given up on titanium, but continues to research “improved titanium” in the hope of further solving the heat dissipation problem. Once the technology matures, we do not rule out returning to titanium bodies in the future.
Another direction that has attracted much attention is “liquid metal”. In fact, Apple has been investing in related technology research and development for many years. The so-called liquid metal is an “amorphous metal material” that has the advantages of high strength, corrosion resistance, light weight and high plasticity. It also has the opportunity to combine better durability with freedom of body design. However, the biggest problem with liquid metal at present is still the difficulty of large-scale mass production.
There are also rumors in the market that Apple may be the first to introduce liquid metal materials into folding iPhones. If a complete supply chain can be established in the future, there will be opportunities to further decentralize it to the Pro series iPhone in the future. However, this change is not expected to be seen on the iPhone 18 Pro series.
Although the relevant news is still a rumor at this stage, it is foreseeable that as Apple continues to test new materials, the body design of the next few generations of iPhone Pro series is expected to see more changes.
