Sony today officially launched the new generation of flagship mobile phone Xperia 1 VIII, ushering in the biggest design innovation in history, and will use a larger telephoto lens sensor, supplemented by AI photography functions, to achieve the best image quality and color at once.
Xperia 1 VIII new design comes from ore
The new design of Xperia 1 VIII is inspired by “ORE mineral texture”. Irregular surface engravings can be seen on the back cover, frame and camera module of the fuselage, just like natural minerals. It is rough but delicate, and it also has a non-slip and comfortable touch feel. Sony also uses graphite, hyalurite, natural gold, garnet and other minerals to launch four corresponding colors: stone black, cold mine silver, raw gold and twilight red.
Of course, the biggest visual change is that the camera island is different! Xperia 1 VIII no longer uses a vertically arranged lens module, but instead uses a rectangular block on the left, where three main lenses are placed in a “two above, one below” format.
The telephoto lens is upgraded and AI is added for better shooting
The Xperia 1 VIII lens upgrade focuses on the telephoto lens. The sensor size is increased 4 times to 1/1.56 inches, and through 48 million pixel cropping, it can support two lossless zoom shots of 70mm and 140mm. The main lens maintains the original dual-layer structure 24mm, 48-megapixel sensor, which can also provide 2x lossless zoom through cropping. There is also a 16mm, 48-megapixel ultra-wide-angle lens that supports macro shooting. A total of three lenses provide five optical quality focal lengths of 16, 24, 48, 70, and 140mm.
In terms of software, Sony has upgraded the latest “RAW file stacking” algorithm at all focal lengths. Compared with the traditional JPG method, it can preserve the complete details of the image direction. With the new HDR and noise reduction technology, it claims that the Xperia 1 VIII’s photos have better contrast and clear dark details than before.
At the same time, Xperia 1 VIII has added the latest “AI Photography Assistant”. Through Sony’s self-developed AI model, it can perform real-time calculations on the device, recommend 4 color styles suitable for the current scene, allow users to switch to different filter effects in real time, and even provide suggestions for lens switching and depth of field functions to help users take more professional photos step by step. In addition, Xperia 1 VIII further provides a customizable “creative appearance”. You can adjust your favorite filter color and set it as a default to ensure that every shot has a personal style.
The upgraded telephoto lens has a 1/1.56-inch sensor, supports two optical quality zoom distances of 70mm and 140mm, and supports up to 17.5x digital zoom.
When composing a picture, the AI assistant will pop up 4 groups of color suggestions in the lower right corner, which can be switched instantly like filters. At the same time, the system will also give shooting suggestions by flashing buttons based on the focal length and background blur effect used.
Sony Group’s audio and video entertainment is protected
Xperia 1 VIII also inherits many of Sony Group’s audio-visual entertainment technologies. For example, the 6.5-inch 120Hz OLED screen is powered by Power by BRAVIA technology, which accurately restores color, contrast and brightness through the TV department’s algorithms.
Sony is one of the few mobile phone brands that retains a 3.5mm headphone jack, and pays homage to the Walkman, which uses “gold” as solder to improve the sound quality of the transmission. The built-in dual speakers have been upgraded with new monomers, bringing richer bass details and vivid treble performance. The wireless specifications also support Hi-Res Audio and LDAC.
The core processor uses Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen5. It is expected to provide three versions of 12GB memory/256GB storage space, 12GB memory/512GB storage space, and 16GB memory/1TB storage space. They all have 5000mAh power and are guaranteed to have 4 years of version updates and 6 years of security updates.
Xperia 1 VIII still retains the physical shutter button and power button combined with fingerprint recognition on the side.
Xperia 1 VIII opens for pre-order starting tomorrow
Sony will launch a pre-order event in Taiwan starting tomorrow. As of May 20, those who pre-order through official channels, e-commerce, and designated online shopping platforms and complete the login process can enjoy 5,000 yuan in shopping credits from Sony Taiwan’s official shopping website and 1,500 yuan in Xperia friend shopping credits. You can get a 1,000 yuan discount when exchanging old products for new ones at official channels. Pick-up is expected to begin on May 22.
