Research company ICT Research Institute has announced the results of international comparison of sales prices for tablets such as iPhones and iPad Pros in Japan with those of G20 members. The iPhone and iPad have the impression that the yen has increased due to the weaker yen and rising raw material costs, but it has been cheaper than the G20 countries.
Compare smartphone and tablet prices with G20 countries
The selling prices of iPhones and iPads in Japan were raised in 2022, when the yen weakened rapidly. Globally, sales prices for smartphones and tablets are on the rise due to rising raw material prices and transportation costs, and there are concerns about the impact of the future tariff measures by the US Trump administration.
ICT Research Institute has published the results of comparing the direct sales prices of smartphones and tablets in G20 countries (Japan, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Canada, Argentina, Australia, Brazil, China, India, Indonesia, Mexico, South Korea, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey).
The survey period is from April 8th to 15th, 2025, and price comparisons are converted to Japanese yen at customs exchange rates (April 13th to 19th).
iPhone16 Pro, G20 is 18.4% cheaper than average
Among the smartphones surveyed, the graph below compares prices for iPhone 16 Pro, iPhone 15, iPhone 16e, Google Pixel 9, Google Pixel 8a, Galaxy S25, and Redmi 12 5G. Each iPhone model is priced at 256GB models.
The selling prices in Japan were 174,800 yen (down 18.4% from the G20 average), the iPhone 15 was 127,800 yen (down 13.9% from the G20 average), and the iPhone 16e was 99,800 yen (down 13.6% from the G20 average), and the selling prices in Japan were cheaper than the G20 average.
The Google Pixel and Galaxy are also cheaper in Japan than the G20 average. The Redmi 12 5G is more expensive in Japan.
iPad Pro (M4) is 10.9% cheaper than the G20 average in Japan
Among tablets, the graph below compares prices for iPad Pro (M4), Google Pixel Tablet, Galaxy Tab A9+, and Surface Pro 11. The iPad Pro (M4) is priced at 11-inch 256GB model.
The selling price for the iPad Pro (M4) in Japan was 168,800 yen (down 10.9% from the average G20).
The Google Pixel Tablet and Galaxy Tab A9+ are also cheaper in Japan than the G20 average. The Surface Pro 11 sells in Japan 5.2% higher than the G20 average.
Other surveys have shown that selling prices for iPhones and iPads in Japan are low.
Looking at the results of a survey by Nukeni, an international price comparison site for gadgets, it shows that the selling prices of iPhones and iPads in Japan are by no means high worldwide.
Among the G20 countries, Turkey and Brazil are regulars in the world where the selling prices of iPhones and other products are the highest worldwide, and in this survey, it is believed that these countries have raised the G20 average.
Prices could rise due to future Trump tariffs and retaliation tariffs
The impact of tariff measures by the US Trump administration has led to concerns rising prices and disruptions in distribution, and there have been calls from the chairman of Apple’s major supplier, Pegatron, who has said that electronic devices will disappear from American retailers.
However, at the time of the survey, there was no impact on direct sales prices in Japan. ICT Research Institute points out that there is a possibility that additional tariffs will be caused by the United States in the future and prices will rise by countries.
