In a keynote speech held in September 2020, Apple stated that it would cooperate with Anthem (now Elevance Health) to conduct a large-scale asthma study. Preliminary research now shows that Apple Watch can track asthma and reduce the number of doctor visits for patients.
According to STAT, the study tracked 900 asthma patients participating in Medicaid and commercial plans. Participants received Apple Watches and sleep tracking pads to monitor respiratory rate, heart rate and other related body data.
The app helps users reflect on symptoms and triggers and provides tools for coping with emergencies. The latest survey data shows that Apple Watch can indeed reduce the number of doctor visits for asthma patients to a certain extent. On average, every 4 users who participate in the program avoid 1 doctor visit.

Bronwyn Harris, a cardiologist who participated in the design of the product while working at Apple, is very optimistic about the Apple Watch’s potential for self-management of asthma.
However, this study focused on Medicaid enrollees, but the actual situation is much more complicated. Although relevant research has made certain breakthroughs, there is still a long way to go before it can be truly promoted.
