In a joint interview with US media Tom’s Guide and TechRadar, Apple’s new CEO John Tarnas and Senior Vice President of Worldwide Marketing Greg Jozwiak also talked about the meaning of the “Duo” in iPhone Duo. What kind of meaning is hidden there?
Isn’t it just a foldable smartphone?
Mr. Jozwiak mentioned that Apple is cautious when adopting new trends, saying that it will enter the market when it has something that feels like “this is it” at the right time.
Foldable smartphones are no exception, and after observing other companies’ products with interest, they seem to have looked for their own approach.
Both Tarnas and Joswiak say that previous folding smartphones from the Android camp have been completely lame, and are enthusiastic that Apple has finally done it the right way to establish this new product genre.
Particularly important is the aspect ratio of the device, with the ratio of 1:1.4 being Apple’s golden ratio for foldable smartphones. Both men also used the term “passport size” in the interview, which shows their commitment to the size of the product when folded.
Two products in one?
Regarding the name iPhone Duo, it is easy to understand that “Duo” indicates that it has two screens, but interviews revealed that it also has the nuance that it is “like two products”.
In response to the question “Are you thinking of using the Apple Pencil?” Mr. Jozwiak said that the iPhone Duo combines the characteristics of two products: an iPhone and another product with a larger display.
Although he did not intentionally refer to it as “two products, an iPhone and an iPad,” he did say that it was another device that would make people want to use the Apple Pencil, and it could be assumed that he was implicitly referring to an “iPad-like device.”
