Apple’s autumn conference is expected to be held this Thursday (September 10), and the outside world is expected to release new models such as the iPhone 18 Pro series and the foldable iPhone. Among them, one of the rumored highlights of the iPhone 18 Pro series is that the main camera introduces “variable aperture” for the first time.
However, in addition to hardware upgrades, the iPhone camera software may also undergo a major overhaul. A developer discovered 5 new camera features in the iOS 27 Beta code that Apple has not yet officially announced, such as exposure judgment, manual focus and continuous Selfie. It is obvious that the iPhone’s native camera is intended to remain simple and easy to use, while also adding more operation methods close to professional cameras.
iOS 27 reveals 5 new camera features
● Exposure oscilloscope: The camera app directly displays histograms or waveforms to help users determine whether the image is too bright or too dark, which is very convenient for users who like to control exposure by themselves.
● Focus peaking and highlight warning: Focus peaking will mark the area that is currently in focus with a colored line; highlight warning will remind you where the image is too bright, allowing users to adjust before pressing the shutter.
● Continuous Selfie: The Selfie adds “continuous shooting”. After taking one picture, it will automatically count down again and then take the next one. When taking group photos or taking selfies with a tripod, you don’t have to run back to your phone to press the shutter every time you take a picture.
● Manual focus: Apple is also testing manual focus, allowing users to adjust and lock the focus without relying entirely on autofocus. The program code shows that this feature is currently only available on devices shipped with iOS 27 or newer, so it may become one of the new features of the iPhone 18 Pro series.
● Image correction based on aperture: This feature is considered to prepare for the variable aperture of the iPhone 18 Pro series. iOS 27 can adjust image correction according to different aperture settings, allowing photos to maintain a more consistent image quality after switching apertures.
There are more professional functions but there are still variables
In the past, the biggest feature of iPhone cameras has always been “pick up and shoot”. Apple did not add too many complex professional settings to the native camera app. The functions exposed this time show that Apple may be adjusting the positioning of the camera. While retaining simple operations, it is also preparing to provide more advanced photography tools.
However, the above five functions are still hidden in the iOS 27 Beta code. Apple has not officially announced it, and they may not be launched with the official version in September. Some functions may be left for subsequent updates. As for which features will be limited to the iPhone 18 Pro series and which ones can be transferred to older models, it is still unclear; and the rumored variable aperture may even be limited to the iPhone 18 Pro Max, and everything still has to wait to be announced at the launch event.
