Rumors about Apple’s first foldable iPhone have continued to heat up recently, and the market expects that this new phone, called “iPhone Ultra”, may debut on September 9 together with the iPhone 18 Pro series. However, although the estimated price is at least US$1,999 (approximately NT$63,000), and may even be US$2,500 (approximately NT$79,000), some compromises on hardware specifications may be made, which has attracted market attention.
According to reports that have been leaked for more than a year, the iPhone Ultra may cancel the Face ID and TrueDepth camera systems in pursuit of extreme thinness and lightness, and instead integrate Touch ID with the side power button. If it comes true, it will be the second time Apple uses fingerprint recognition on its flagship iPhone since the iPhone 7 in 2016.
In the camera department, the iPhone Ultra is expected to use a dual-lens configuration, including a 48MP main lens and a 48MP ultra-wide-angle lens, but the telephoto lens of the Pro series may be eliminated. Bloomberg pointed out that people who have actually touched the new machine have a good impression of the overall product, but the camera system may be the part where consumers are most likely to be disappointed.
In addition, the new phone may adopt an eSIM design and not provide a physical SIM card slot; if equipped with Apple’s self-developed C2 modem, it may not support mmWave 5G, making the 5G connection mainly Sub-6GHz. As for MagSafe, the latest news is that Apple has successfully integrated magnetic components into the ultra-thin body, so it is expected to be retained.
In terms of price, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo estimates that the iPhone Ultra may be priced at US$2,000 to US$2,500, which is significantly higher than the current iPhone 17 Pro’s starting price of US$1,099 (approximately NT$34,000). If the price of the iPhone 18 Pro increases by $200 to $300 simultaneously, the foldable iPhone may still become one of the most expensive iPhones in Apple’s history. Whether a balance between high price and functional trade-offs can be achieved will become the biggest test after the product is launched.
