Samsung’s foldable mobile phone Galaxy Z Fold8 is selling like hotcakes around the world, and is even in short supply. According to Korean media reports, the market demand for Galaxy Z Fold8 far exceeds expectations. Now it is forced to prioritize the DDI chip quota originally reserved for the development of new phones next year into the mass production of Galaxy Z Fold8, which shows the market popularity of this folding mobile phone.
According to Korean media reports, Galaxy Z Fold8 is facing a shortage of production capacity due to market demand far exceeding expectations. Samsung plans to increase the production of 1 million units, but is limited by the production capacity of DDI display driver chips. The chips are manufactured by Taiwan’s UMC with a 22nm process. However, UMC’s customer schedule is already full and cannot provide additional supplies.
Korean media pointed out that Samsung once proposed to UMC to speed up the production of DDI display driver chips with a “Super Hot Run”, but UMC was unable to cooperate due to a full schedule. In response, Samsung decided to divert the DDI chip quota originally reserved for the development of new phones next year to the Galaxy Z Fold8 to solve the production bottleneck problem first.
At present, Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 is sold out in many capacities and colors on the official US website, and orders are temporarily unavailable. However, the current supply in Taiwan is still stable, and only the 512GB version of pistachio green will be shipped on September 9.
Since Apple will release its first foldable iPhone this month, with the extremely high brand loyalty and discussion among Apple fans, it may have an impact on Samsung’s current dominance of foldable phones.
