Google officially launched Android 17 in June, and Pixel users were the first to upgrade. Now Android 17 QPR2 Beta 3 has added a new built-in function that can implement App Lock. As long as you press and hold any application icon, you can see the new “Apply Lock” option in the “Action” menu. This can avoid the embarrassing situation of privacy leakage when you borrow your phone from a friend and accidentally click on messages, chat records, photo albums, etc.
In the past, if you want to lock an app, you need to download a third-party app tool and lock it separately. However, Android 17 directly turns App Lock into a built-in function of the system. Pixel 6 and above models can use it first. Just find the app you want to lock on the desktop or in the app library, then press and hold the app icon to bring up the menu, then select App lock, and follow the system instructions to set the verification method to complete the locking.
Locked apps will require fingerprint or PIN code verification before opening. Without passing the verification, the app cannot be opened. This completely prevents others from peeking into bank accounts, text messages, or chat history. Notification content will also be hidden simultaneously, preventing sensitive information from being exposed on the lock screen or notification bar. Even app shortcuts and components will disappear.
Android 17 QPR2 is expected to be launched in December this year, when App Lock will be the first to be used on Pixel 6 and above models. As for other brands such as Samsung, it will be pushed out one after another according to each company’s system update schedule. The actual support time depends on the original manufacturer’s arrangements.
