Sony’s Xperia 5 series of mobile phones, which focus on being easy to hold and fit in the hand, have stopped updating since the Xperia 5 V in 2023. No new phones have been launched for three consecutive years since 2024. For this reason, many fans have been looking forward to the resurrection of the Xperia 5 series.
As for whether Sony will restart this product line? Senior executives also gave the latest answer when interviewed by Japanese media “ITmedia” recently.
Xperia 5 disappears for 3 years, executives reveal future plans
Sony admitted frankly that the current Xperia product lineup has indeed been reduced, and it will continue to observe market trends, consumer spending habits, and changes in mobile phone usage in the future. However, at this stage, it would be more efficient for Sony to concentrate resources on the two major product lines.
In other words, in the short term, Sony will still focus on the flagship Xperia 1 series and the mid-range Xperia 10 series, and currently has no plans to launch a new Xperia 5 series.
As for Sony’s mobile phone layout this year, in addition to the new-generation flagship Xperia 1 VIII, which was launched in May, it is estimated that the mid-range Xperia 10 VIII will follow. If it continues the product rhythm of last year, it is expected to be launched in September.
Retaining the headphone jack and memory card slot Sony: becoming its own characteristics
In addition, Sony also talked about two features that Xperia phones have maintained for many years, including the microSD memory card slot and the 3.5mm headphone jack. Even though most current flagship phones have long since eliminated these designs, Sony still believes that they are an “indispensable” part of Xperia and an important feature that differentiates it from other brands.
Interestingly, this persistence really hits consumers. Sony revealed that it conducted a survey on “Why buy Xperia 1 VIII” and found that supporting microSD memory card expansion ranked first among the reasons for buying the phone. This shows that this feature, which is becoming increasingly rare on mainstream flagship phones, has become a major selling point for Xperia to attract consumers.
