Recently, it was reported in the market that due to the continued surge in global memory prices, Google is evaluating the purchase of memory from Changxin Memory (CXMT), a major Chinese memory manufacturer, which has aroused great concern in the industry.
Previous reports pointed out that Google seems to be planning to use Changxin Memory’s memory products, but it has not yet determined which products it will be used in. Possible directions speculated by the outside world include Pixel smartphones, Google’s self-developed tensor processor (TPU), and even Google Cloud cloud infrastructure, among which TPU is the most popular.
Some foreign media have even further interpreted that if the new generation of Pixel 11 series is introduced with Changxin storage memory, Google will have the opportunity to reduce cost pressure and allow the new phone to maintain the current selling price without increasing the price.
However, well-known analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has come forward to refute the rumors, saying that according to the latest industry survey, Google currently does not have any clear plans to purchase memory from CX Storage, which is inconsistent with recent market rumors.
Market participants believe that it is not ruled out that Google has been in contact, but it is still far away from actual procurement cooperation. As for the reason why Google ultimately did not promote the cooperation further, it may be quite complicated. On the one hand, the U.S. government has continued to pay attention to the development of China’s memory industry in recent years. It has been reported in the past that it is considering restrictive measures on Changxin Memory. Although no relevant ban has been implemented so far, the subsequent policy direction is full of variables. On the other hand, Changxin Storage’s current production capacity scale and product specifications may not fully meet Google’s needs.
