According to the latest supply chain news, Samsung is planning to introduce higher-specification ultra-thin flexible glass (UTG) into future folding flagship products. By increasing the thickness of the glass, it will effectively dilute the crease in the center of the screen and further improve the flatness of vision and touch.
The technical details leaked this time show that Samsung is developing a new UTG glass layer with a thickness of 60 microns. Looking back at the previous product line, the ultra-thin glass used in Galaxy Z Fold 6 is only 30 microns thick, which was later increased to 45 microns in subsequent models to enhance panel durability. If the thickness is successfully pushed to 60 microns this time, it will not only significantly improve the structural strength, but also be a key step in solving the problem of uneven folding screen surfaces.
This new technology is not expected to be popularized in all models immediately, but will adopt a progressive testing strategy. According to reports, UTG glass with a thickness of 60 microns will be the first to be installed on the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide, which has a special positioning. This model has a passport-like wide-ratio body design and a different screen aspect ratio from the regular version. It is suitable as a market test for new screen materials. If the actual feedback of this model in the market is satisfactory, this technology will be fully transferred to the more iconic Galaxy Z Fold 9.
In comparison, the conventionally designed Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra is expected to continue to use the current 45 micron ultra-thin glass.
