Attention, Apple Watch users, the “walkie-talkie” that was once regarded as one of the featured functions seems to be quietly passing into history.
watchOS 27 is a new generation operating system for Apple Watch. Apple has now opened a developer beta version, and the official version is expected to be launched this fall. However, users who were the first to upgrade to watchOS 27 Beta 1 found that the “Walkie-Talkie” app was no longer found in the system, and there was no option to re-download and install it.
Walkie-talkies have been launched for 8 years without major updates
“Walkie-Talkie” first appeared with watchOS 5 in 2018. It operates through the FaceTime communication framework and has no distance restrictions. During use, both Apple Watches must remain connected to the Internet, and can be connected to iPhone, Wi-Fi or mobile networks via Bluetooth.

Apple has yet to make any official statement about this change, so it’s still unclear whether this feature is temporarily removed from the watchOS 27 beta or if it is scheduled to be permanently retired. Although it is not ruled out that Apple may re-join it in subsequent test versions in the future, judging from the current situation, I am afraid it will soon become history.
watchOS 26 still works fine
Foreign media also believe that even if Apple finally terminates the “walkie-talkie”, it is actually not surprising. It has been nearly 8 years since this feature was launched in 2018. During this period, Apple has hardly brought any major updates to it, and its presence has become increasingly low. However, it is worth noting that in the current watchOS 26, “Walkie-Talkie” can still be used normally.
According to the upgrade list announced by Apple, watchOS 27 only supports Apple Watch Series 9 and subsequent models, Apple Watch Ultra 2 and subsequent models, and Apple Watch SE 3.
