Google is optimizing and adjusting the traffic incident notification interface of the Android Auto version of Google Maps, hoping to reduce driver interference during navigation and further improve driving safety and user experience.
Google Maps will gradually introduce traffic incident reporting functions in Android Auto and Apple CarPlay starting in 2024. This feature has already appeared in the mobile version of Google Maps as early as 2019. Later, in order to strengthen the integration with Waze, Google decided to extend it to the in-vehicle system platform, allowing the two navigation services to share more real-time traffic information, including accidents, road obstacles, police enforcement and other notifications.

However, the current version of Google Maps, when receiving a traffic incident notification, will cover part of the navigation screen with a pop-up window, display accident or obstacle information, and ask the driver to confirm whether the incident still exists, or click “Not here” to report error information. Before the prompt disappears or the user performs an operation, some navigation information, such as turn-by-turn instructions and itinerary information, may be obscured.
According to foreign media “9to5google”, Google has recently begun testing a new interface design. The new version of Google Maps no longer replaces navigation information with traffic incident notifications, but redesigns the screen layout to display event reminders between the next intersection instructions and the bottom itinerary information block. In this way, even if a traffic notice appears, the navigation information can still be completely retained on the screen, and the driver does not have to lose important route information because of checking the notice.
Although the new interface may make the screen look more compact, the biggest advantage is that all key information is retained. If the user does not want to interact, they can ignore the notification and the system will automatically shut down and return to the normal screen. If the user is willing to participate in the report, it can also help Google continue to update traffic data and improve navigation accuracy.
Reports indicate that this update has begun to be gradually pushed to the Android Auto version of Google Maps through the server side, and is expected to be expanded to the Apple CarPlay platform in the future. Since the update is not tied to a specific application version, users are advised to maintain the latest version of Google Maps and wait for the new interface to be gradually opened for use.
