Google has officially announced that it will extend its AI assistant service to the platform and launch a streamlined version of the AI assistant called Gemini Go. This new feature has been developed primarily for Android (Go Edition) phones with at least 2GB of RAM. Considering that 2GB RAM has become the legal minimum hardware requirement for the system since Android 13 (Go Edition), it is expected that a large number of current entry-level models on the market will be eligible for this upgrade.
In terms of system positioning, Google pointed out that Gemini Go was originally designed to help users stay connected and handle daily tasks efficiently on devices with less storage space. With the launch of the new system, Gemini Go will completely replace the original Google Assistant Go. Users do not need to download a huge separate program, this feature will be directly integrated into the Google Search application. In terms of operation, users only need to long press the home button, or long press the power button on supported devices, to wake up Gemini Go and start a conversation.
Although it is a streamlined version, Gemini Go still retains many useful core functions. The system can make calls or send text messages through natural language commands, and provide navigation and life information, such as querying driving times to destinations, searching for nearby restaurants and electric vehicle charging stations, etc. In addition, users can also use it to set alarm clocks, create calendar events and control media playback. In order to improve the accuracy of AI response, Gemini Go also supports a file upload function, allowing users to submit documents, photos or other files to provide richer background information for conversations.
Regarding the actual update schedule, Google said that the rollout of Gemini Go will be carried out in phases. According to the practice of previous system updates, the phased push process often takes a long time to process, so users with eligible Android Go devices may still have to wait several weeks before this feature can be officially used on their phones.
