Valve’s gaming handheld console Steam Deck OLED announced today that many countries around the world have raised prices significantly, with the price difference reaching 40%.
According to Valve’s official announcement, due to the increase in memory and storage space, the price has increased. In the United States, the Steam Deck OLED 512GB has increased from US$549 (approximately 17,261 yuan) to US$789 (approximately 24,807 yuan); the 1TB version has increased from US$649 (approximately 20,405 yuan) to US$949 (approximately 29,838 yuan).
At present, the price on Taiwan’s official website has not changed, but all models are out of stock. Therefore, even if it is still the old price starting from 18,980 yuan, consumers can only look at it but cannot buy it. It is speculated that the follow-up will be the same as in overseas markets, after the price is determined, restocking will be done. Valve admitted that the new price of the Steam Deck itself has not changed, mainly reflecting the state of component costs and other global logistics challenges faced by the entire industry.
All game consoles are rising
Even though Steam Deck has only upgraded the screen panel since its launch in 2021, it has not brought growth in terms of performance. It is already an old console that has been on the market for many years, but it is still affected by memory and components. The challenge of rising costs is not limited to Valve. Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft have all raised the prices of game consoles this year, even breaking the inertia of “buy early and enjoy early, buy late to enjoy discounts.” For example, PS5 and Xbox Series S/X have increased their prices several times since their launch. It is rare for the same model to become more expensive as it sells.
