There have been rumors in the market that Apple intends to introduce Touch ID fingerprint recognition unlocking function for Apple Watch. However, according to the latest news, this design does not seem to be realized in the short term, at least for the new Apple Watch in 2026.
The well-known Chinese Weibo leak account “Snap Digital” revealed that Apple currently has no plans to add Touch ID to Apple Watch. The relevant rumors can almost be regarded as rumors. Apple still prefers to allow Apple Watch users to unlock it through a paired iPhone.
As for why Apple is reluctant to add Touch ID, the main reason is space issues. Since the internal space of Apple Watch is already quite limited, if you insert the Touch ID module, it will inevitably compress the configuration of other parts. Therefore, Apple seems to prefer to leave space for more important upgrades, such as larger battery capacity and more advanced health sensors. In other words, Apple believes that users may care more about battery life and health functions than adding Touch ID to their watches.
Based on rumors from various parties, the new Apple Watch, such as Apple Watch Series 12, which is expected to be launched in September this year, may be just a conservative upgrade. The real major design revision will not be until 2028 at the earliest. Apple’s current development focus is on “non-invasive blood glucose monitoring” technology, but it is still in its early stages and it is still unknown when it will be officially launched.
