Google’s new generation of Pixel 11 series this year has not yet been officially unveiled. Revelations about next year’s Pixel 12 series have already surfaced. Among them, the most concerned one is still the development direction of its own Tensor chip.
Starting from the Pixel 6 series, Google has fully switched to self-developed Tensor chips. Although Tensor chips have improved from generation to generation, if you look at pure performance alone, it is still difficult to compete with flagship chips such as Qualcomm and MediaTek. It has also made many users curious whether Google will consider switching to other platforms.
However, according to the latest news from the whistleblower MysticLeaks, Google has no plans to give up Tensor in the short term. The Pixel 12 series expected to debut next year will continue to be equipped with the new generation Tensor G7 chip.
It is reported that the internal code name of Tensor G7 is “Lajolla” or “LaJolla”, and the name may be taken from La Jolla, a well-known coastal area in San Diego, California, USA. However, the current specific specifications of this chip are still quite limited, and it is generally believed that Google will still leave it to TSMC for foundry.
It is worth noting that this year’s Pixel 11 series is expected to be equipped with Tensor G6, which is expected to be Google’s first chip to use TSMC’s 2nm process. Therefore, Tensor G7 is also likely to be further upgraded to TSMC’s improved 2nm process.
However, if you expect Tensor G7 to significantly catch up with its competitors in terms of running score performance, I’m afraid it’s better not to have too high expectations. Because Google’s strategy for Tensor in recent years has not been to pursue ultimate performance, but to emphasize AI functions and actual use experience.
In other words, rather than a “performance monster”, Google has always wanted to build Tensor into a chip that focuses on integrating AI applications with the Pixel ecosystem.
