Apple just dropped the new M5 MacBook Pro and the internet is already asking the same question…do we need to upgrade?
I’m a trailer composer running Logic sessions with 150+ tracks, huge orchestral libraries, synths and sound design – my 2021 M1 Max with 64GB RAM still handles everything without breaking a sweat.
In this video I run a real session so you can see how it performs and then we look at whether the new M5 actually changes anything for music producers.

I know that orchestral sounds take up a huge amount of storage space. Currently, the maximum SSD capacity is 8TB. When do you think next-generation MacBook Pros will move to 16TB or higher?
This would have been interesting if you had taken the same session and run it on a new MacBook Pro M5 (Max).
2012 Macbook Pro (non retina) works extremely well for audio production today.

There’s other benefits worth noticing. Like improved battery life, better speakers, higher screen brightness.
Personally after upgrading my phone to the latest model in a pro version – I fell like now I don’t want to settle for anything less in a laptop.
Those three things I have mentioned above are so impactful it’s impossible to briefly describe. So I can’t even imagine how much of s difference does it make in a laptop.
And I honestly would love to get an Air, because Im not a heavy CPU user. No greater need for cooling in my case. But I feel so discouraged by its screen brightness… Knowing how much 3k nits matter in my phone right now.
And from the M1 even a keyboard is an upgrade. It does feel so much different that you won’t ever want to come back to the older version…
How good is the base model M5 chip in your opinion. New producer here. No refurbished machines where I live.
I have $2000 budget that I wanna spend for a home studio and right now I’m most likely gonna decide on this laptop. I was looking at the M4 air or m5 air. The pros are a beast, but the airs are superior too when it comes to music production.

From the research I've made and the budget 1250€ I've come to conclusion I wanna look for M2 Pro 32GB 14" – since I want to travel with it to work and be light, but still having the ability to record rock bands I play with. What do you think?

I know that Logic Pro and Ableton, along with most DAW’s, don’t use the performance and efficiency cores to anywhere near their maximum. The DAWS that use the cores the best are Reaper and Cubase.
I have a 24 core CPU, 60 core GPU, and a 32 core neural engine. 128 gigs of RAM and 2 terabytes of SSD.
I have Studio M 2 Ultra. I’m hoping I can hang onto it for a long time. I have trouble with a ton of instances of Kontakt instruments. I can run tons of tracks using Omnisphere 3, but NI Kontakt and some plugins from HEAVYOCITY and Kepler2 really make the DAW break a sweat. I don’t think it’s the computer as much as the DAW.

I got maxed out 14" M1 Max and I need to reinstall the OS and all apps and plugins from scratch so I wonder if it's time to future proof myself with the m5 Pro/Max, so I don't have to deal with the same thing after 1-2 years

got a Mac mini M4 Pro 24 GB/1 TB and a MacBook Pro M5 Pro 24 GB/1 TB, both purchased in 2026 (I purchased the MacBook Pro 2 weeks ago), both are POWERFUL I don't see me "upgrading" again for at least the next 5 years or so, I wonder if the next Mac I get is gonna be a M10 Pro or something lol

i9 MacBook Pro here. I am starting to crashing my logic and cubase sessions to its limit. Seriously considering upgrading to M5 pro. Has the same CPU as the M5 max.
I have a Mac Studio M2 Ultra, with 24 core CPU and 128 gigs of memory, and 2 terabytes of SSD. I use three external drives. I have to hang onto this for a long time. I first bought a MacBook Pro with an M3 Pro chip and 36 gigs of memory and a terabyte of SSD. I should have kept that one. It would have been fine. But someone talked me into spending a lot more money. I got full credit for my MacBook Pro, thankfully. But yes. You’re right. It’s so easy to get wowed by the numbers. 24 core CPU-60 Core GPU-24 Core Neural engine. And it doesn’t make much difference at all to a computer that cost half that price.

Man in 2020 right before covid I switched from a 2010 MBP to a Asus laptop because the MBP cpu was outdated and it couldn't handle the NI Massive X vst, I got the Asus w 32 Ram its i7 9650H and i upg the nvme to 2TB and added a 4TB SSD both Samsung, still rocking till this day no issues, Apple is extremely expensive‼️
As I'm typing here on my M3 Max 16" MacBook Pro with 128Gb of RAM, I can definitely say that I went completely OTT with the RAM. I didn't need anywhere near that for what I do. 64Gb would've been plenty for what I do. But hey, I've got it now. The machine itself is the very best computer I've ever worked with bar none. The only thing it slightly struggles with is heavy loaded complex patches within the voltage modular synth. Don't feel any need to upgrade any time soon tbh. I doubt I'll ever buy another desktop computer again.
