Which is right for you; M5 or M5 Pro?
The M3 Pro was a beast, that was only two years ago, and the base M5 is faster than the M3 Pro. So I'm pretty comfortable with saving a few dollars with the base M5.
Watching this on my M5 Pro, this thing is incredible! Handles music recording hours long sessions with ease, and not plugged in, the battery lasts very long. Doesn't heat up, doesn't miss beat with anything, couldn't be any more smitten, love this machine! Coming from PC, this is like magic, everything works and everything works seamlessly.
Will the extra performance in the M5 Pro increase its longevity generally as a laptop? I have a 2015 MBP 15”.

For most people, buying an M5 Pro or Max means you’ll barely use its full performance, and the only downside is reduced battery life. Unless you have a clear reason, just go with the standard M5.

Heya Matt, I have a question:
I currently own a M4 Max 16" MBP with 64GBs of RAM, a terabyte of storage. This is my main workhorse.
I went out and bought a base M5 14" and kitted it out with 32GBs of RAM, also a terabyte of storage. I plan to use this machine for my "travel" setup. In the more than occasional cases where I am out and about and still want to work and perform my creative pursuits.
See, the M5 Pro just came out a couple of days ago, and I've been getting this weird feeling that maybe I didn't need the 32 GBs of RAM, at least paired with the base M5. Since the M5 Pro can't be configured with 36 GBs, my two choices going that route would've been 24, or 48GBs.
I work primarily in photography and videography, with 4K video streams captured from an A7R V. I don't shoot with these, I mainly just edit as part of my job. All of the media I handle is from that camera and I typically process a maximum of maybe 75 photos per folder. Catalogue would've been around 2,000 photos. And video editing is simple transitions but with a lot of processing and color correction especially denoise filters.
Did I make a bad purchase decision? Thanks!

about that write speed performance and it you re gonna use it hold my beer …running k8s with 30 containers on it.. one of them being kafka
are you not testing the unbinned one m5 pro ? am confused if the extra cores will throttle the performance due to thermals so binned is a better choice by saving 230# or should go for the unbinned one

I got the M4 MacBook Pro and I’m keeping it for a couple more years I was originally getting and M4 Air but it costed $1800 so i just got the MacBook Pro
Note that the scores perfectly line up with the core specs, the ratios are perfect! Very nicely preformed testing Matt. Hats off.

Base M5 with a 24gb ram upgrade is all most will ever need.
i purchased a M5 25GB Ram and 1TB storage when the pro and max chips werent out yet, and i can say i dont regret the decision, the power is more then enough for on the fly video and photo editing, and because it is the normal M5 chip the battery lasts so much longer. I will most likely get the new M5 Max Mac Studio when it comes out to have max power for the home setup

I've got a M5 Pro base model and it's buttery smooth. The battery life should be similar to M5 model if only running low demanding tasks. I haven't heard the fan run once yet.

Bought a 14” M5. Saving money for a Studio m5 Max 128GB. The M5 is just for single core work. Came from intel i9. The performance cap is incredible.

There's more differences than just performance. Wifi 7 vs WiFi 6E, more external display options, Thunderbolt 4 vs 5 etc
