IT House reported on September 5 that according to foreign media Mac Rumors, there are recent rumors that Apple’s first foldable iPhone may be named “iPhone Duo” instead of “iPhone Ultra” or “iPhone Fold” as previously reported online.
Referring to the previous disclosure by Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman, although many employees within Apple have already called the first Apple foldable iPhone “iPhone Ultra”, “iPhone Ultra” is not the final official name of the phone.
Of course, there is currently no conclusive evidence that Apple will eventually adopt the name “iPhone Duo”, but Apple has also used the Duo name in the past. In the 1990s, Apple launched the PowerBook Duo series of laptops; in the 2020s, the company also launched the MagSafe Duo charger.
Of course, Microsoft launched the dual-screen Android phone Surface Duo in 2020, but the product line was canceled after two generations. Intel also launched its popular Core Duo and Core 2 Duo processors in the 2000s. So if Apple takes this historical background into consideration, it may choose to avoid using “Duo” as a new product name.
Ultra and Fold also have similar problems. Samsung currently has products such as Galaxy S26 Ultra and Galaxy Z Fold8, so if Apple adopts iPhone Ultra or iPhone Fold, it will be similar to iPhone Duo in terms of originality.
Of course, judging from Apple’s existing product lines, “Ultra” has been widely adopted by the company, including Apple Watch Ultra, CarPlay Ultra, and M1-M5 Ultra chips. Therefore, if Apple finally chooses iPhone Ultra, this name will fit in the existing product naming system quite smoothly.
Apple is expected to hold a new product launch event next week and is expected to officially announce its first foldable iPhone. By then, whether this product will be named iPhone Ultra, iPhone Fold, iPhone Duo, or a completely different name will be announced soon.
