Apple is reportedly expected to equip the 2026 model iPad mini with an OLED display and update its design.
In addition, it was reported that Apple was planning to transition from LCD to OLED displays in the 2027 model of MacBook Air, but it was later postponed to 2028 or later.
However, new information suggests that the MacBook Air will be equipped with an OLED display in the 2028 model year.
iPad mini will be redesigned with OLED display in 2026
Bloomberg reporter Mark Garman predicts in his newsletter “Power On” that the iPad mini will be equipped with an OLED display and have a new design in 2026.
It is rumored that the display size of the OLED display model will increase by 0.2 to 0.4 inches, and the body size may change or the bezel width may become narrower.
In addition, the biometric authentication mechanism may be changed from the current model’s built-in Touch ID top button to Face ID. In recent years, the unit price of Face ID parts has been falling as the number of models that use it has increased, so it seems likely that it will become a reality in terms of cost.
When will iPad Air be equipped with an OLED display?
The iPad Air is expected to transition to an OLED display in 2027.
However, according to Garman, adoption is expected to be in either the 2027 or 2028 model year, which may be a little later than previously expected.
MacBook Air will be equipped with OLED one year earlier
Regarding the timing of the OLED display on the MacBook Air, it was originally said to be “after 2028”, so some thought that it would be a 2029 model.
However, Garman says that it is likely to be adopted in the 2028 model year.
There are also rumors about the adoption of a new type of LCD display.
On the other hand, there are rumors that before the MacBook Air transitions to an OLED display, the 2027 model will adopt a liquid crystal display (hereinafter referred to as the new liquid crystal display) that uses the same oxide TFT technology as the Pro Display XDR.
If this is true, the 2027 model will adopt a new type of LCD display, and the following year, the 2028 model will transition to OLED.
However, it is unlikely that the display technology will be changed continuously in just one year, and plans to adopt a new type of LCD display may have been cancelled.
