Apple iOS 27 is expected to add iPhone Handoff function.
Apple is expected to launch iOS 27 this month. In addition to the familiar feature updates, a developer recently revealed a new “iPhone Handoff” feature. In the future, users can prepare two iPhones and use the same mobile phone number for the two devices to freely switch between different iPhones. This is very practical for users who have a main phone and a backup phone.
“iPhone Handoff” was actually briefly mentioned by Apple at the WWDC 2026 conference in June this year, but at that time it only appeared in a slideshow listing hundreds of new features, and no further details were announced. Recently, MacRumors forum member pdfu demonstrated the actual operation using two simulated iPhones through the Device Hub of Xcode 27.
Judging from the exposed content, users can enable the function in the “Mobile Services” menu of the “Settings” App, and can specify the main iPhone and companion iPhone during the setting process. Apple will keep the primary eSIM on the primary device and configure a companion eSIM for the second iPhone, allowing both phones to take turns using the same phone number.
In addition, mobile network related settings are still managed by the primary iPhone, while location sharing will change depending on which iPhone is currently using the phone number. In other words, users can take one of the mobile phones with them when going out, leave the other at home, and switch between uses as needed.
However, in addition to requiring both iPhones to be upgraded to iOS 27, this feature may also require support from telecom operators. It is currently rumored that T-Mobile in the United States and Deutsche Telekom in Germany may become initial support providers. After about 3 months of beta testing, iOS 27 is expected to be officially launched this month.
