SAMSUNG is about to hold a Galaxy Unpacked conference in London next Wednesday. On the eve of the event, the official took the lead in revealing the key technology “Flex Titanium” for the new generation of folding screen mobile phones. Looking back at the third-generation Armor FlexHinge hinge used in the previous generation Galaxy Z Fold7, it successfully reduced the thickness and weight of the fuselage significantly. The newly introduced Flex Titanium technology this time mainly improves the durability and crease problems of flexible screens in preparation for the upcoming new generation of Galaxy Z Fold series!
This new screen architecture consists of two core components, namely titanium alloy film and flexible titanium plate. The titanium alloy film placed under the OLED panel is extremely thin. Measurements show that it is only about one-third the thickness of a human hair, but its rigidity is 20 times higher than the polymer films used in the past. The titanium base plate below is responsible for supporting the entire display panel to ensure that the surface remains flat when the screen is unfolded. The SAMSUNG engineering team reduced the air gap between the display and the support plate to make the two more closely integrated, thereby effectively reducing the conspicuousness of the screen crease.
Applying titanium metal to an extremely thin screen structure that requires frequent bending is a major engineering challenge. Kyung-Jin Yoo, head of SAMSUNG Display’s mobile display product development team, pointed out that the team successfully struck a balance between flexibility and durability by adding a micro-opening design to the folding area of the titanium base plate. This technology, developed based on the experience of seven generations of Galaxy foldable phones, not only improves the screen’s ability to withstand external impacts, but also ensures that the device remains structurally stable after hundreds of thousands of openings and closings.
The upcoming Galaxy Unpacked conference in London will be themed “A New Shape Unfolds”. The market expects that in addition to regular updated models applying Flex Titanium technology, SAMSUNG will also display a folding phone with a wide-screen design using a new body ratio, which will be positioned between the Galaxy Z Flip and Galaxy Z Fold, providing consumers with more diverse appearance choices.
