Every once in a while, Google will update the underlying Linux kernel (Kernel) for Pixel phones. Such updates usually do not bring visible new features, but they often improve system stability, security, and overall performance. The latest news points out that Google is preparing to launch another wave of large-scale core upgrades for Pixel phones.
According to the news, Google will soon upgrade Pixel phones to Linux Kernel 6.12. The affected models include Pixel 7 series and above, but the Pixel 6 series is not included in this update list.
Understand the core version of each current model at once
● Pixel 7, Pixel 8, Pixel 9 series: 6.1-android14
● Pixel 10 series: 6.6-android15
After the update is completed, all the above models will be upgraded to 6.12-android16. In theory, the new version of the core is expected to bring better system performance, including faster app startup, smoother operations, improved battery life, and even help reduce heat generation. However, the actual improvement cannot be confirmed until the update is officially launched.
The last major Linux core upgrade for Pixel phones was with the launch of Android 15 QPR2 in 2024. This new version of the core is likely to be released with Android 17 QPR2 at the end of this year. However, Google has rarely specifically mentioned such core updates in the past, so even if the new core version is officially launched, it may not be actively mentioned in the update notes of Android 17 QPR2.
As for the Pixel 6 series, they may not be eligible for this upgrade. The reason is that the official software support for this series is expected to end in October 2026, so it is not expected to receive subsequent core updates. It should be mentioned in addition that most Android mobile phone brands rarely upgrade the Linux core version for existing devices, and Google is almost the only brand that continues to do so.
