Various sources have pointed out that Apple will adjust its iPhone release strategy starting from this fall’s conference and change it to “twice a year” updates. If this news is true, it means that the standard iPhone 17 will break the record and become the longest-serving flagship iPhone in history.
It is reported that the September launch will focus on high-end models, and will only launch iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max and the first folding iPhone. The standard version of iPhone 18 will be postponed to the spring of 2027, when it is expected to appear together with iPhone 18e and iPhone Air 2.
Assuming it is projected to be released in mid-March 2027, it means that the product cycle of the standard version of iPhone 17 will be about 18 months, breaking the record of iPhone 4.
iPhone 4 current record holder
This record is currently held by the iPhone 4. The iPhone 4 was launched in June 2010 and was not replaced by the iPhone 4S until October 2011. The flagship status was maintained for about 16 months.
The reason for this situation is that Apple changed the iPhone release schedule from summer to autumn, thus making the iPhone 4 product cycle longer than in previous years.
It is worth noting that although the first-generation iPhone SE to the second-generation iPhone SE, and the second-generation iPhone SE to the iPhone 16e are more than 4 years apart, these are different product positionings and are not Apple’s annual flagship update, so they are not included in this comparison.
