Recently, camera evaluation agency DXOMARK conducted a detailed white balance accuracy test on HUAWEI Mate 80 Pro Max and iPhone 17 Pro Max. Although both devices are high-end flagship phones on the market, test data shows that HUAWEI Mate 80 Pro Max performs better in color reproduction!

The DXOMARK team set up a mixed-light scene in a lab environment to directly compare the two phones’ camera systems. The final results reflect that HUAWEI Mate 80 Pro Max wins this duel, with its white balance accuracy surpassing Apple’s flagship product, proving that the manufacturer’s upgrades in color sensing hardware are indeed effective.
The technical core of white balance accuracy lies in neutralizing the color temperature of the light source. This is a basic camera setting that adjusts color to ensure that white objects remain neutral white under different lighting conditions. Current smartphone lenses are usually designed for scenes with a single main light source, and most of them can operate stably in this case. However, when there are multiple light sources with different color temperatures in the shooting environment, it is often difficult for traditional camera systems to accurately neutralize the colors, resulting in obvious color casts in the photos.

The multispectral lens equipped by HUAWEI provides a solution to this problem. This sensor can not only recognize the conventional RGB (red, green, blue) color array, but also has the ability to measure multiple light wavelengths. This depth of optical data collection enables the phone to calculate more accurate white balance values when dealing with complex scenes where warm and cold light intersect. Through this hardware technology, mobile phones can provide more accurate environmental color reproduction under complex light sources, present more natural skin tones when shooting portraits, and ensure consistent image quality in various scenes.
