In my case, ChatGPT worked perfectly on other phones, but pairing always failed on one iPhone. The real cause was a DNS-level ad blocker blocking part of the OpenAI authentication process.
### The fix that worked for me
Temporarily disable your:
* DNS ad blocker
* VPN
* iCloud Private Relay
* Safari content blocker
* Security or filtering app
You can also whitelist these domains in your DNS or ad-blocking service:
* `auth.openai.com`
* `chatgpt.com`
* `openai.com`
Restart ChatGPT, generate a new pairing QR code on your computer, and scan it again.
### Additional troubleshooting steps
Because pairing works on other phones, the laptop and OpenAI account are probably fine. The affected iPhone may have cached authentication data or an old passkey/MFA record.
1. Delete ChatGPT completely
Hold the ChatGPT app icon and select:
Remove App → Delete App
Do not choose Offload App.
2. Remove OpenAI website data
Go to:
Settings → Apps → Safari → Advanced → Website Data
Search separately for:
* `openai`
* `chatgpt`
* `auth.openai`
Delete all matching website data.
3. Check for an old OpenAI passkey
Open Apple’s Passwords app and search for:
* OpenAI
* `chatgpt.com`
* `openai.com`
Delete only the OpenAI or ChatGPT passkey if necessary. Keep your saved password, and make sure you have another working login method first.
4. Check the iPhone date and time
Go to:
Settings → General → Date & Time → Set Automatically
Then restart the iPhone.
5. Reinstall ChatGPT
Download ChatGPT again from the App Store and sign in using the same original method you normally use:
* Continue with Apple
* Continue with Google
* Continue with Microsoft
* Email and password
6. Create a fresh QR code
On the laptop, revoke the previous Remote Control connection and generate a completely new pairing QR code. Scan it immediately with the affected iPhone.
In my case, reinstalling and resetting the connection did not solve it until I disabled the DNS server ad blocker. Once the authentication domains were no longer blocked, pairing worked normally.
If the problem continues even with DNS filtering, VPN and Private Relay disabled, contact OpenAI Support and include a screenshot of the exact error.
