The M5 MacBook Air will thermal throttle and slow down when you have it do certain things like crossover gaming, video transcoding, code compiling and local AI. But there is a modification you can do yourself in less than ten minutes that will (up to) DOUBLE the performance in certain tasks! I used 1.5mm arctic thermal pads inside the case, over the logic board to bridge the heat dissipation off the logic board and onto the bottom of the computer.

Im honestly shocked at how good this m5 air is. at my work I have a fully loaded m4 mac studio and I thought that was a beast, then I got one of these airs for myself and what ever I was running on the studio works flawlessly on this thing with zero mods. I do primarily work with Davincie resolve studio and 4K60 multicam timelines that are typically 30 min to an hour long (TV broadcast stuff). this being said, I will say anyone who has a MacBook air should shoot for 32 gigs of ram. in my preliminary observationa on my mac studio I was hitting 24 gigs + depending on how intensive simple texts were, so that's how I came to the conclusion I need the next step up. anyways ran the same test u modded on my mac air and it handled editing like a dream. the bottle neck is the tender and exporting. I was getting at least 200 fps export speeds in the mac studio (again fully loaded m4 max + 48gb chip set). on my brand new m5 air (32 gb + 10 core chip), this was 125 fps. this makes sense, double the cores on the Mac studio. anyways I will be doing this mod and work on a thermally disapative surface to assist with heat. thanks
what hardware monitor app are you using?
What size and thickness of thermal pad did you use?
I forgot what I was tryin gto learn on this video half way in… no freaking way to follow 1 topic in here.
Take the mod out and put the laptop on a laptop cooler…or just use it with your DIY cooler setup and show us the results…
I'm curious to see how this mod perform with the water cooling system of 50w.
The battery wasn't designed to handle temperatures over 50°C like processors are. The back cover will heat up the battery and reduce its lifespan
so thermal mod + adding the magnetic phone cooler would reduce temp further right
Does the modification could affect apple care + insurance? Like, making them cancel it
You should compare the thermal pad set-up to a good laptop cooler.
Thanks i just done this mod on my M5 air using Artic 1.5mm thickness. Got the back cover back on fine just took a while to line us the clamps but got there i dont have any bulging on the back case. i used a very good lengh to cover the whole logic board.
LAPtop is a misnomer. Desktop seems more accurate.
Just curious. Don't u impact the warranty coverage by altering the internals?
Love this mod and excellent instructions. However, I wonder how much the extra cooling capacity will be defeated if I add a polycarbonate case for protection? Plastic is a poor heat conductor.
Easier way is to use small screw bit and hook the screw hole so u can lift the bottom cover with your finger/nail and pop 1 by 1, its better and safer than using metal/plastic picks and save money from suction thingy. Finally slide the panel out while lifting the opposite side
I will do this in 6 months when my basic warranty expires!
Just a thought: wouldn’t be possible to add some sort of insulation between the bottom cover and the battery?
That way, it should be possible to avoid temperature increase (hence, life reduction) on it.
Sounds like snake oil to me
do we replace the pads yearly similar to thermal paste on custom built PCs?
Didnt even show the process. Moron boomer.
